Living with Foot Drop. How a Knee Walker Helped Me Stay Independent
By Lydia Lucas
May 12, 2025
When I was first diagnosed with foot drop, I had no idea how much it would impact my daily life. It wasn’t an injury I could see—but I could certainly feel the difference. Simple things like walking across a room, going out for a coffee, or even standing at the kitchen counter became unexpectedly difficult.
I’d never had a mobility issue before, and suddenly I found myself navigating a world that wasn’t built for dragging a foot behind me. At first, I was given crutches by my physio—but they weren’t sustainable. I felt unstable and exhausted. That’s when I was introduced to the StrideOn knee walker, and it honestly changed everything. Understanding Foot Drop Syndrome Foot drop (or drop foot) is a condition where you have difficulty lifting the front part of your foot. It’s usually caused by nerve damage, a neurological condition, or muscle weakness, and it means your foot may drag along the ground when you walk.
For me, it came on gradually, following a back injury. I couldn’t lift my toes properly, and I found myself constantly tripping. The anxiety of falling became just as limiting as the condition itself.
When it got worse, my specialist recommended I go non-weight bearing on that leg for a period to allow rest and avoid further injury while we explored treatment options. That’s when I started looking for a more practical solution than crutches. Why I Chose a StrideOn Knee Walker
I did a lot of research. I knew I needed something that would help me move safely and comfortably, and still allow me to get on with life.
The StrideOn Knee Walker stood out because of its design:
It was easy to manoeuvre around the house, especially with its tight turning radius.
It had a comfortable knee pad that I could rest my affected leg on without any pressure.
The parking brake meant I could stop, lock it in place, and still do things with both hands—like cook, make a cup of tea, or do light chores.
Suddenly, I wasn’t reliant on someone to help me get around. I could move confidently and independently again. The Difference It Made to My Recovery Using a knee walker allowed me to rest the affected leg while still staying active in other ways. I could get outdoors again—even short trips to the local shop or down the road for some fresh air were a huge morale boost.
More importantly, I wasn’t worrying about falling every time I moved. That sense of security gave me peace of mind and freedom, which helped me stay positive during what was otherwise a frustrating chapter.
Over time, I was able to start physio, rebuild strength, and eventually move to a support brace. But I credit the knee walker with keeping me mobile and independent when it mattered most. Why I’d Recommend a Knee Walker to Anyone with Foot Drop
Foot drop might be invisible to others, but it affects nearly every step you take. If you’ve been told to go non-weight bearing, or you’re simply looking for a safer, more stable way to get around, I can’t recommend the StrideOn Knee Walker enough.
It’s comfortable, secure, and genuinely empowering—everything crutches weren’t for me.
Thank you to the team at StrideOn for your support, your brilliant design, and for helping me stay upright and independent through it all.
